Blog silence
Speaking of John Stackhouse – and I still can’t get over running into him at the Holiday Inn, mentioned here - he writes a humourous piece about email (or in our present case, blog) silence that frequently happens over the summer.
I’ve come to see e-mail silence–when someone takes longer to reply than I think she should–as a Rorschach test. How I interpret that void, how I fill it in, tells me what’s in my mind to use as filler.
Well, don’t let my blog silence over the next few days alarm you. I’m on my way up north – to Moose Factory ON and Waskaganish QC, two Cree communities on the shores of James Bay. I’m on a listening tour with Briercrest who are doing a feasibility study on the possibility of establishing a Centre for First Nations Studies, and I will be joining a key group from the school to listen to needs of two First Nations communities regarding education. Read this post from the Briercrest website which describes what they intend to do.
This will be my first visit to an indigenous community in Canada – amazing eh? I have visited tribal villages in the Filipino jungle and African savannah, but never in my own backyard. About time, I’d say.

Wow. I think I am a catastrophist, as John calls it. I think most women are. Never a pessimist, though. Just a realist.
I think this condition (catastrophism) says something about a person, though: that they are self-centred, self-conscious and simultaneously narcissistic, always assuming the other person is purposely doing/not doing something to hurt or inconvenience THEM. But I’m sure that, realistically, the other person is much more likely to be simply absent-minded, busy or genuinely ignorant of their impact on one’s life.
Good points, Mark.
